Salt Nic · Freebase · mg Explained · Starting Strengths
Choosing the wrong nicotine strength is the most common reason people give up on a new device. Too low and the craving stays; too high and the hit is harsh. This guide explains the two nicotine types, what the mg number means, and how to pick a starting point.
1. Nicotine Salt vs Freebase
| Nicotine Salt | Freebase | |
|---|---|---|
| Typical strengths | 20–50mg | 3–12mg |
| Throat hit | Smooth even at high strength | Stronger as strength rises |
| Bottle size | 30ml | 60–100ml |
| Suited device | Low-wattage pod systems | MTL tanks (3–12mg) and sub-ohm mods (3–6mg) |
| Vapor | Low to moderate | Moderate to large |
Salt nic lets a small pod deliver satisfying nicotine with little vapor. Freebase is meant for setups that produce more vapor, so it uses lower strengths.
2. What Does "mg" Mean?
The number is milligrams of nicotine per milliliter. A 30mg salt has 30mg in every ml. Because a DL mod vaporizes much more e-liquid per puff than a pod, a 3mg freebase in a mod can feel as strong as a far higher strength in a pod.
Never put high-strength salt nic in a sub-ohm mod.
The amount of nicotine per puff becomes very high and harsh. Keep salt for pods and use 3–6mg freebase for sub-ohm.
3. Picking a Starting Strength
| If you… | Device | Start with |
|---|---|---|
| Smoke more than a pack a day | Pod system | Salt 50mg |
| Smoke up to a pack a day | Pod system | Salt 30mg |
| Smoke lightly or already vape | Pod system | Salt 20–30mg |
| Want a tight draw in a tank | MTL tank / pod | Freebase 6–12mg |
| Want big clouds | Sub-ohm mod | Freebase 3–6mg |
These are starting points, not rules. If you feel dizzy or the hit is harsh, step down; if cravings return quickly, step up.
